Q&A - What is a "cold pressed oil?"

Answer:

Cold pressed oils, also known as cold expeller pressed oils, are oils obtained by mechanically pressing the oily parts of the plants in a temperature controlled environment.
The friction, necessary for this process, causes temperatures to rise, the harder the plant being pressed, the higher the temperatures can get, temperatures can not rise above 120°F (49°C) for any oil to be considered cold pressed.

This process is not as efficient as using heat and hexane, but the oil remaining from cold pressed seeds, nuts or vegetables has no trace farm chemicals, no hexane molecules, no poisonous trans fatty acids.

You can find many of the amazing cold pressed Brazilian Oils at my site Rainforest Chica.

No Wax All Natural, Vegan Lip Balm

Natural lip products are usually made of waxes, butters and oils.
Beeswax is the most commonly used, but Candelilla and Carnauba are becoming more and more popular with the increasing demand for vegan products.
Waxes are mostly used to raise the melting point of lip products, they do offer some health/beauty benefits but they are not as beneficial as butters and oils.
I am not a huge fan of stick lip balms (they end up melted on the bottom of my purse or my Jeep's cup holder), so my lip products don't need to be super hard.
Ucuuba butter is softer than all the waxes but still hard enough to make a perfect jar or tin lip product.
Depending on the other products used, I use 1/2 to 2/3 of Ucuuba for my recipes.
A balm made from Ucuuba can also be used on upper lip to help with those pesky little wrinkles, cuticles, dry patches, etc...

Ucuuba Butter Benefits

Ucuuba Butter is said to have anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties and is ideal for treating acne, eczema and dry or irritated skin. Exceptionally rich in essential fatty acids, Ucuuba Butter is considered to have anti-aging properties and can be used to replenish tone and moisture to dry and mature skin.

Anti-aging Lip Balm

Ucuuba Butter - about 1 oz
Muru Muru and Cupuacu Butters - 0.5 oz (0.25 oz. of each)
Pracaxi and Acai Oils- 10 drops of each

  •  Put all the ingredients in a VERY clean and dry glass jar, make sure the lid is also clean and doesn't smell like food.
  • Put jar in a pot with water, make sure it is not too much water, jar is not supposed to float.
  • Use low to medium heat, water does not need to be boiling.
  • As soon as all the ingredients are melted, pick up the jar using a towel, *JAR WILL BE HOT, BE VERY CAREFUL*
  • DRY the jar very well, if water gets in your balm it will shorten the shelf life of it.
  • Pour in the container of your choice (I like the cute metal tins), put in the fridge for a few minutes and you will have the best lip and fix-everything balm ever!

Ucuuba butter is dark brown and offers a nice gloss but natural coloring and scents can be added, they will limit the uses of your balm. I do add a couple drops of coconut unsweetened flavor oil, which still allows me to use it anywhere else I want.
Unless they give you different directions, add coloring and scents AFTER the butters and oils are melted.
This recipe can be modified easily with the uses of other oils (for a cheaper version coconut or olive oil can be used), if using different butter, melting points have to observed.

I sell these Butters and Oils at my shop Rainforest Chica.
I sell individual tin cans on my site, for more quantities take a look at Paper Mart and SKS sites.

Reviews for our products on RainforestChica.etsy.com

"Thank you Chrys for these amazing oils and butters! I will definitely be back. I have made a nice face moisturizer using the andiroba, acai, pracaxi and buriti. I've been using it about three days now and my face is soo soft. I will be trying the bacuri butter in a hand-made lotion for my achy knees. And my first purchase, ucuuba butter, has proven to keep my extremely dry hands moisturized. I'm trying to use the butters and oils in there natural state, i.e. not adding anything extra...and yes, it is extra work to melt the ucuuba butter because it's natural state is hard, but it is well worth it. I just place a portion in my hands and rub them together. :)"

Ucuuba Butter - "This butter is amazing. I've been using it as a pre-treatement prior to me shampooing and then in my conditioner. My natural AA stays moisturized and doesn't appear to "frizz" as much. I have also had the pleasure of communicating with Chrys prior to making additional purchases. She is extremely knowledgeable and very responsive to inquiries. Etsy asset. :)"

Bacuri Butter - "Appreciate the usable packaging. Finally a butter to soothe my winter itch. Absorbs quickly."

Buriti Oil - "Quick shipping. Can be applied to face with no irritation, a little goes a long way."

Cupuacu Butter - "This butter smells similar to Cocoa butter, but with a much lighter scent. This butter is very soft and fine. I use it as a leave-in conditioner/moisturizer for my hair--curly, dry, low porosity hair type. It does not leave my hair greasy like Shea butter."

Pracaxi Oil - "I have long naturally curly hair. It is really dry and I live it Southern California. I use this between shampoos to keep it in control."

Buriti Oil - "I used this on my skin after I had a sunburn issue. Cleared up the problem. I have allergies to a lot of products. No problem with this. LOVE!"

Andiroba Oil - "My husband uses this after he shaves. Loves it!"

Bacuri Butter - "What a wonderful butter. It sinks right into the skin and makes it soft and smooth. Very Hydrating!"

Buriti Oil - "Regenerating for the skin! Love It! I also burned my skin the other day. I put some of the oil on it and the next day the redness and pain were gone."

Pracaxi Oil - "Wow, I wish I could give this 10 stars! It smells like cocoa butter in a way; but it works 100 times better and quicker! I literally saw a drastic improvement in my acne and acne scars overnight! I'm glad that the seller recommended this to me. Finally something that works! Thank you!"

Bacuri Butter - "This butter goes on very easily! I can't tell if it gives me a glow or not because my skin is golden and glowy already. I have noticed a slight difference in my hyper-pigmentation overnight though! Great butter! Thank you for suggesting it to me (:"

Butter Sampler - "love these butters, I bought the sample package, this is what I call amazing butters, nice texture and natural nutty scent. I had an issue with delivery and Chrys the shop owner responded promptly and I received my package. Definitely will buy from this shop again."

Ucuuba Butter - Ecology and Popular Uses

Ucuuba Butter - Baboonwood - (Virola surinamensis, Myristicaceae)

POPULAR USES
Commonly, the oil is used as an ingredient of candles and to burn for light, which spreads an aromatic odor. In home medicine, it has been successful at treating  rheumatism, arthritis, colic, ulcers, and hemorrhoids. The butter of ucuuba, which is hard and yellow, can be used in combination with other ingredients for the production of candles and plant-based soaps, and is a substitute for paraffin, which is made with petroleum. Soaps and creams made with ucuuba show a proven anti-inflammatory effect, and have healing and anti-septic properties. A mature ucuuba tree can be sold for R$ 5.00, which is then transformed into broom handles that are sold for R$ 0.40 each in the fairs and ports of Belém. However the seeds, which are sold for R$ 0.50/kg, can generate an income of R$ 18.00 to R$ 25.00 per year, assuming a productivity of 30 to 50 kg of seeds per year. The fruits are collected along beaches and streams throughout the Amazon region, stored, and sold to make plant-based butter that replaces animal tallow when making soap.

ECOLOGY
Ucuuba is a native tree of the floodplains found throughout the Amazonian region, extending to the states of Maranhão and Pernambuco. The indigenous name of the tree means grease (ucu) and tree (yba). This species prefers flooded regions, and reaches a height of 25 to 35 m. A mature tree can produce between 30 to 50 kg of seeds per year. The seeds are rich in fats (60%–70%) and extracts of oil / tallow can reach 50% per kilo of seeds (dry weight). A plantation with 150 trees per hectare can yield up to 7 tons of seeds per year, which can be processed into 3500 kilos of fat per hectare. Trees can grow 3 m over the course of two years. The wood is of excellent quality and is used for particleboard and laminated wood. The extraction of trees for these uses is endangering the remaining forest resources.

Andiroba Oil - Ecology and Popular Uses

Andiroba Oil - Crabwood (Carapa guianensis, Meliáceae)

POPULAR USES
Andiroba oil is one of the most commonly sold medicinal oils in the Amazon. Mixed with honey and copaiba, it is a very popular anti-inflammatory medication used to combat throat infections and influenza. It also strengthens and embellishes hair, and when used in soap it acts as a magic remedy for acne. Due to its good skin penetration, it is often used in massages to relieve bruises, dislocations, arthritis and rheumatism, and acts to sooth the surface of the skin and to bleach superficial stains. It is also used to repel mosquitoes. Traditionally, an oilseed cake is formed into balls and burned and also mixed with annatto (Bixa orellana) and formed into a paste that is used to protect the body from mosquito bites.

ECOLOGY
This species is a neotropical tree that occurs in southern Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil, Peru, Paraguay, and the Caribbean islands. In Brazil, it is found from sea level to 350 m elevation, throughout the Amazon basin, both in terra firme forests and on land that is temporarily flooded, along rivers and streams and near the mangroves. The seeds float and can be dispersed by water. However, in forests, most fruits and seeds are found under the parent tree. The seeds are eaten by rodents, armadillos, peccaries, pacas, deer, cotias, etc. The origin of the name andiroba is from nhandi (oil) and rob (bitter). Andiroba belongs to the same family as the mahogany and cedar tree, and is highly demanded by sawmills because it is very resistant to insect attacks.
IIndividuals of andiroba can reach 30 meters in height and grow well to different environments, such as flooded areas and terra firme. A mature tree can produce up to 120 kg of seeds per year (average 50 kg / year and tree). The seeds contain 43% fat. To produce a liter of oil, using rudimentary methods, 12 kg of seeds are needed. To extract the same amount, a mechanical press requires only 4 kg of dry seeds and only 3 kg of seeds are needed when using chemical solvents. The amount of oil that can be produced from the seeds of one andiroba tree can reach 10 liters per year, using rudimentary methods, and up to 30 liters using industrial techniques.
Due to its ability to grow rapidly and because of its valuable timber, andiroba is used in intercropped and agroforestry systems. Plantations in monoculture are compromised by Hypsipyla grandella, which attacks the terminal bud of the tree and inhibits further growth. This insect is a major pest of species of Meliaceae in the Amazon region. Although this has consequences when cultivating the tree for its wood, fruit production remains the same for individuals that survive an attack, which is not as intense as attacks on mahogany.

Soap Making with Exotic Oils and Butters - calculator and tips.

There are a lot of sites teaching the art of soap making. And with a little practice and creativity it is not hard to forget the basic coconut, olive and palm oil recipe and start customizing your soaps, incorporating different, more exotic, ingredients.

First you need to figure out the properties you want your soap to have, you want a soap for sensitive skin? Eczema? Hair? Dogs? Guys? Clothes?

Then you need to find the mix of oils and butters that will offer that property and will be the right balance to meet all the Soap Qualities: hardness, cleansing, bubbly lather, creamy lather and conditioning.

To read more about fatty acids and soap qualities visit this site.

If you know the Physical-Chemical Data of each oil and butter you should be able to incorporate any oil into a recipe, but calculating the lye amount and the fatty acids and their properties requires more math than I am feel comfortable suggesting you do...

Many sites offer lye calculators, not many include the more exotic rainforest oils and butters. But I found a few that do have some of them.
1. Majestic Mountain Sage has Babassu, Cupuacu and Passion Fruit.

2. Soap Calc has Andiroba, Babassu, Cupuacu, Muru Muru, Tucuma and Ucuuba.

3. From Nature With Love gives you Acai, Andiroba, Babassu, Brazil Nut, Buriti, Cupuacu (refined though) and Passion Fruit.

Then, of course the few tips, all based on common sense, but we all know that common sense just isn't! So before playing Mad Scientist:

  • Get gloves and protective eyewear, all is fun and games until we go blind!
  •  You will be playing with lye! Use bowls that won't react to it: strong plastic, stainless steel, glass, enamel. No that bowl you mix your pancakes just won't do!
  • Same go for mixing spoons, measuring spoons and spatulas. Get at least one heat resistant mixing spoon for water/lye mix and another to combine the elements. Many people use electric stick blender, it saves you time and energy.
  • An accurate scale for measuring liquids.
  • Two accurate candy or meat thermometers for determining the temperature of your liquids.
  • If you use wood or cardboard molds, line it with waxed or greased paper.
  • Have plenty of rags or paper towels to wipe up spills.

Also don't forget that making soap for yourself or for sale should be a fun and creative process, which according to my soap making friends, comes when you get a little more experienced. Maybe start experiencing with smaller batches before you go full blown industrial scale!!

Good luck and if you want to make a soap that is a bit more exotic and expensive, you can find fresh, self sustainable, fair trade Rainforest Oils and Butters at my Etsy shop - RainforestChica.

Whip It Good - tips on whipped butters!

After a few experiments, using many different butter and oil combinations I had amazing successes and some sad and ugly results.
Even though you should think first of the amazing properties of the products you are whipping, your whipped butter should also be pleasurable to your senses.

Skin: in order to have a somewhat firm whipped butter you need a butter with a higher melting point, I use Cocoa butter or Ucuuba butter. Cocoa butter has a bit of a draggy feel and Ucuuba is very hard and brown. So it is a matter of personal taste.
This harder butter should be at least 1/3 of your recipe.

For hair I use MuruMuru and Cupuacu, a hair butter needs to be lighter, but it will melt faster if left in warm conditions.

For your other butter you can choose something that you love, taking in consideration the butter skin/hair properties, the feel, smell and color of it.

For example: I love unrefined shea butter but can't stand the smell of it, refined shea butter loses some of its properties and it is a lot greasier.

I usually like mixing all of my butters for skin. On this recipe you can see the cocoa butter wafers in the bottom, then I added Cupuacu, Shea, MuruMuru and, the amazing but ugly, Bacuri.

A lot of recipes call for coconut oil being 1/3 of your whipped butter, but when using oils with a lower melting point (liquid oils) you need to use less of them.

I never make more than 12-24 oz of butter at time, I use a very clean (sometimes it takes 10 washes and some soaking) glass jar to melt the butters.

After the butters are all melted I add the oils, I have so many amazing oils I can afford to skip coconut oil. Since my oils are liquid, they make up just about 20% of my recipe.

When I use Bacuri butter the melted result, as you can see, is very dark, even if Bacuri is just 10% of my recipe, don't worry, once it is whipped it will become a yellow/beige butter.

After mixing the oils with your butter, you need to pour the mix into the container you will use to whip it, and put in the fridge until it is cooler and semi-solid (at least the top).

I use a regular mixer, since they are kinda cheap I recommend you have one just for your butters. You don't want pieces of food falling into you creation.

I just found out that a cylinder container will work A WHOLE LOT better for your whipping, I was amazed how much faster my butter was ready once I tried this container:

It was just luck, I was being lazy and wanted to whip in the same container I would keep the butter, but from now on I will never whip on a regular bowl again.

This is my hair butter with Muru Muru, Cupuacu, Babassu and Pracaxi, it is fluffy, light, almost white, but I would not trust it in room temperature here in Florida...

Listen, I have read a lot on whipped butters, but ultimately, it is not an exact science. It is supposed to be fun and good for you, you need to like the feel, look and smell of it and you need to enjoy making it!

If you have skin conditions some of these butters and oils can help, Pracaxi oil, for example, is amazing for scars and hyper-pigmentation, Bacuri oil helps with eczema, most of them will help with the prevention of stretch marks and help to diminish the appearances of them.

If you want a scent in your butter, use a good quality essential oil, just a few drops should be enough, I mix it right before I am about to whip.

I think that is it, please contact me to add to this post, ask anything, thank me or tell me I am full of sh*t and your recipe exploded!!

In my Etsy store I sell a Six Oil Sampler and a Five Butter Samples, 1 oz of each one of my oils or  butters.

 Five Butter Sample

You can also use most butters on your puppies and cats with skin conditions...
